While the Model 1865 used old .58 caliber barrels, the Model 1868 was the first model where the U.S. government manufactured completely brand new barrels from scratch. By design, these newly made military barrels measured exactly 30.5 inches long and were chambered in the powerful .50-70 Government centerfire cartridge.To save taxpayer money after the Civil War, the Springfield Armory built the Model 1868 rifles by recycling surplus parts. When they manufactured your .50 caliber rifle, they reached into the bins of leftover wartime parts and pulled out. This trapdoor has a contract lockplate and stock manufactured by the Whitneyville Armory during the war (complete with sub-inspector Charles B. Long's "CBL" stamp) and a leftover Civil War breechblock lid stamped 1869. The rifle�s serial number, 8767, is stamped on both receiver and barrel.
