A steerable or trackable air drop axle (commonly referred to in the trucking industry as a self-steer lift axle, drop axle, or pusher/tag axle) is an auxiliary suspension system that can be lowered via air pressure to handle heavier legal payloads. Unlike standard rigid drop axles, a steerable drop axle features wheels that swivel and articulate automatically, following the path of the truck's front steering mechanism to prevent tire scrubbing and chassis strain during tight turns.
