The dark horns rise from a common bony pedicle, are heavily ringed through the lower two-thirds, and angle forward and outward before hooking sharply back at the tips. Hartebeest are large African antelope of the open grasslands; the red hartebeest of southern Africa is the form most commonly taken by sport hunters. Mounted for wall hanging.
