The original RPD operates as a fully automatic weapon, chambered in 7.62�39mm, and is distinguished by its distinctive pan magazine and gas-operated system. In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, the RPD�s design and parts found their way into civilian markets through various importers, including DSA Inc., an American firearms distributor. These imported RPD machine guns were often assembled from surplus kits sourced primarily from military surplus parts. The kits typically included original RPD components, such as barrels, bolts, and gas systems. Due to strict regulations governing fully automatic firearms in the United States, these surplus RPD kits were converted into semi-automatic rifles to comply with federal law.
